We're successfully inside dreamhost plan now so that means that this may be one of the last posts inside this motel's address. Over the weekend I shall remain home for the most part hopefully aided by ex-contributor issa and local friend annie working on the new site. According to issa new site could very well be complete before Tuesday... I am speechless.

Thank you so, so much. I was honestly expecting to have a pair of weeks before we reached our goal and I'm having trouble getting over the response to our brief fundraising drive. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Your generosity is overwhelming. You have funded the motel for a whole year in just a week! yay!

This week I've been very busy with exams and final projects but as i catch up with things in here I will be writing back to all those who contributed to please everyone of their requests. We will also start changing home over the weekend so stay with us and pardon the upcoming mess while we do so. there's some really good things coming up.

...whew quick update just to freshen up. The fund drive is still on. Click here. We are almost there. 81%. We might be able to finish it by early nextweek and possibly makes Moka worried about moving to new server before Christmast.

Fund drive month continues. First of all thank you everybody who has donated, I am sure Moka is busy building the personalised playlist by now. (haa haa ..., have fun Moka.)

Back to business. I think it would be fun as a historical note to see what certain amount of donation can buy in term of consumer electronic gadget. For $48.37, people could by the first transistor radio, TR-1. It was actually listed at $49.95 and at today's dollar would be around $395.

"Consumer Reports had a one-page review in April, 1955 (p.171). In using phrases such as "toy-like novelty" and "has made use of the transistor's small size, but...offers no other advantages" in comparing it to tube sets, they rain on an otherwise revolutionary parade. Their comparison of two transistor and one hybrid (a transistor and tube combination) radios in July, 1955 (p.305) panned the TR-1 again. Most listeners would probably agree that the also-ran Raytheon 8-TP (at a whopping $79.95, approximately $550 today) sounded better. With 8 transistors and a larger speaker, it should, and did. But the smaller form factor of radios like the TR-1 was irresistable, and would be here to stay. In time, small radios would supply much of the performance of the larger sets, at least in terms of sensitivity and selectivity, although they would almost always compromise tone quality. Another review, somewhat more favorable, appeared in the same month in Consumers' Research Bulletin (July, 1955, p.29). " (more)

A cent is all we need...

So I guess everyone knows by now that MdM is homeless... we lack a place in which to upload our songs and call our own. Sad, but true oh faithful readers. I myself would like to apologize for my lack of posting, I´ve been backed up with work all month and haven´t really had any time to use the FTP that is graciously being lended to us.

I belive MdM will back on its feet in no time, but for us to do so, we need your help, yes, YOUR help dear readers. You are the ones that make this blog (and many others for that matter) what it is. I would like to ask for your help so we can get up and running once more, but to do so we need a bit of cash... well... not a 'bit' it's actually quite a quantious sum of money that we cannot spit out on our own account *sigh*... that's why we would like to ask for your help, any donation will be INMENSLY helpful, ANY amount of money, anything from a cent to a dollar, all will be put into the MdM restoration. Anyway... now that I have appealed to your heart into helping us, I'd like to share a bit of music with you all. Last week a VERY good friend of mine discovered this AMAZING band called Nine Rain.

Nine Rain is a multinational band formed by the American Steve Brown, the German Nicolas Klau, the Mexicans José Manuel Aguilera and Alejandro Herrera and Cuban musicians. What truly blew me away from these guys is the way the make the music flow changing the textures from beat to beat. They have a very wordly sound, but they're actually based in Mexico, so they actually sound from 'all around' but keeping deep Mexican roots in the rythms with melodic vitality.... ok ok... enough blabbering, here is a small sample of Nine Rain, enjoy:

First of all I wish to thank reader Oscar for allowing us to host our files for a temporary time while we're homeless. As this is a loan and I'm very afraid of exhausting Oscar's bandwith I need to ask of you readers not to hotlink the files on other page and download the files without streaming. Oscar writes some excellent podcasts on the alt stream radio, Enfiltro. Y sigo dandote las gracias, Oscar.

A mixture of folk tingled songs, some old/new, released/unreleased records. I'm specially fond and deeply recommend the Benoit Pioulard and Dosh which have been spinning all last month on my stereo and the unmastered song of which seems like a brilliant follow-up album by Paul Duncan. And oi! Aaron Coleman wrote some great reviews with podcast included at almostcool for both Pioulard and Dosh albums, read & listen here and here.

I'll make a quick temporary note for fund drive. (no pix. blogger is down again. will make nicer FAQ soon.)

- MdM crews did shell out money on 2 ezarchive accounts. They are useless now.

- MdM bandwith consumption is pretty big. It definitely need something in the range of 1.5TB for regular serving, and more for future projects (unlimited). If anybody know reliable host offering cheaper price, drop an email.

- MdM plans/waits for inspiration to create more fun blog stuff. Movie, place for new indie bands, etc. But these definitely need host

- Blogger.com is getting really fubar.

- no, none of us can spring that much money on our own. And currently there are 4 active posters. (Would you ask sweet Kahlo to shell out money? of course not.)

- There are big advantage of keeping MdM free of ad. We will try to do without ads if possible. Hence fund drive.

Note: I tend to believe that MdM best output is when things are unraveling fast. The sense of urgency to salvage a moment gives little steps that made the whole thing moves again. Or probably it's me having a mild melancholia with head swirling from some yucky liquids they make take. At anyrate, this is exactly that, one would need a certain urgency and detachment to follow the sudden dynamic change, in order to hear it all. Russian piece opening, remix of famous 1981 Eno's album, thumping Aphex Twin, and sunk deep into a collage of odd pops. It's apocalyptic view of love, a gentle remnants of feeling wrapped by maddnes of place and time. One is infinately aware of love, hate and end of time. Abstract yet very real.

a dream

two years ago a very close friend of mine lost his wife to a condition that was never diagnosed, and since then he has had many vivid dreams about her/

he posted this latest dream on his blog today, so i'm sure he wont mind me repeating it here/ a little background: he is a big fan of time travel, not just the idea but the serious possiblility of it actually exsisting/... with this dream i now understand why he is fascinated by it, a reason i shouldve figured out right away, but didnt/

just woke up from this:

i was going climbing with some friends. we met at this sort of creepy cool old used bookstore on the outskirts of town. it was famous for being able t get whatever old out of print book you needed, and usually in good shape. i was walking thru the stacks, and ran into angela lansbury. but she was in her teens. i didn't think anything of it at the time, just thought it a bit weird. i knew it was her, but didn't think anything of the fact that she was 19. i think maybe i had seen her a couple of times before this. i got some books, including some old climbing guidebook. went to the checkout aisle, and as i'm waiting to be checked out, angela lansbury--the murder she wrote one, who's in her 60's walked by. i made eye contact with her, and asked her if she knew of any special books she could suggest i read. she told me to come over so she could whisper it to me. "you'll want to check out 'the linesman'." is all she said, but she winked as i drew back from her. i don't remember looking that book up, but when we(some climbing friends and i) left the store, i knew that the store was a time vortex or something. by reading that book, one would unlock the secrets of the time travel. that's how they got all those old books in great shape.
so, we're driving to the climbing spot, and my phone rings. i pick it up, and anna answers. she's been dead for two years now, and the same was true in the dream. i didn't want to spook her, cos i was talking to her, and didn't wanna fuck something up or scare her or anything. she asked me a couple of things, oh, i remember having told her once a long time ago that i'd be seeing her soon. she asked me where i was, cos i had called a while ago, telling her i'd be home soon. i asked her where she was, but she wouldn't answer straight out. i eventually got out of her that she was at this mexican restaurant that we went to once. i know we only went there once, cos i could--in the dream--use this to figure out we were in boulder, but i could't narrow down the time frame. she could sense i was getting at something, but i didn't want her to know yet. i said to her "this is gonna sound really strange, but what year is it?" she wouldn't answer. she sounded kind of put off, in fact, that i'd even ask. i didn't know if she was sick by this point or not. but that wasn't what i was getting at.

(break from the dream, this is josh talking reality for a moment)
the last book we both read (her first, then me) was called the time traveller's wife, by audrey niffeneggar. if you haven't read it, i would highly suggest you do so. when you do, you'll know why this book especially means something more than just a book we read together.

(back to the dream).

i was trying to discern if she had read this book yet or not, in the time she was calling me from. i guess in the dream she was already sick, but she didn't know she was gonna die. in the book, henry dies, and claire knows it. but henry's the one who time travels, and is always hiding things from claire. it's a great turn of circumstances...i was trying to figure out if the anna on the phone had read the book, and put together that she was gonna die. but i didn't want to scare her.
i asked her a couple of times what the year was, but she wouldn't tell me. i finally asked if she had read anything by audrey niffeneggar. she finally said that she had, and she got a little choked up when she answered.
i knew that shew knew, at this point. that she was gonna die, i mean. in fact, she told me. something to the effect of "josh, i know." all i could do was manage to get out "i love you so much, anna. i miss you." and it was completely garbled, cos i was crying already, but i didn't want to not say them. she ended with "i know, josh. i know."

end of dream.

dunno if it exists or not, but i'm off to find a book called the linesman now.

Esta semana comenzó muy bien, mi abuela llegó a visitarnos y eso que significa? Significa MUY buena comida, buena compañía y más que nada, buena música.

Mi abuela es una persona con un carácter fuerte, sus opiniones son directas y sinceras, es una de las peronas mas cariñosas y más independientes que he conocido en la vida. La admiro y la adoro, así de simple.

En los años 60´s, mi abuela fue descubierta por tener una fabulosa voz y mucha habilidad con guitarra, y fue así como llegó a grabar unos cuantos discos para Capitol Records en la Ciudad de México con el nombre artístico de "Juana Gallo". Afrotunadamente, mi tio encontró los viniles y los pasó a formato CD para poder guardarlos y sacarles copias. Una de esas copias llegó a mis manos y he decidio dedicarle este post a mi abuela Juana Gallo.

The good news is, there are a handful of artistically minded inkers at work out there, and if you're gonna spend anywhere from a few hundred to a few grand on something that will be inked into your flesh until you die, well, don't you want it to be atypical and dynamic and ingenious? Don't you want something you can look at every day and go, whoa, what the hell is that, and is that really a part of my skin, and isn't that just the most fascinating thing?

Don't you want, in other words, a piece by someone like this French guy named Yann? Sure you do. The newish tattoo blog Needled.com pointed me to this guy's deliriously cool work, which you won't find in any of the aggro-trashy American tatt mags. He is, apparently, quite the sensation among tattoo cognescenti in France and Europe. Yann's work is amazing and odd and childish and beautiful and strange, Egon Schiele meets Edward Gorey meets Picasso in a deep closet of folksy childhood whimsy. You gotta check out his gallery.

It is, of course, not a style for everyone. And you'd have to fly all the way to France to get a piece by him. But it could certainly encourage anyone considering the acquisition of serious ink to maybe think beyond your average dolphin-in-a-rainbow. Please. ...

Society Islands

I tag a mini review here, because it's an interesting unsigned artist. Society Islands recently released their debut album, Kiss & Tell. The album is somewhere between happy lounge and ballad pieces, with very down to earth songs. The lyrics are classic poems, innocence but magical combined with the melody. Remember Innocence Missions? Yeah that. It's the type one listens while looking at the window watching leafes floating by. etc. I love it. It's simple and makes me smile. Go visit his webpage.

Those nights were I went off alone for a drive out of the city to listen to some music while watching stars and cars passing on the highway are slowly coming back. Specially check out "#6" and "taken in" from raro & apenino and red favorite, a pair of psych folk gems taken from two of the most hypnotic and beautiful debuts (in every sense) I've heard this year.

Today I'm testing some alternate uploads on fileden since ezarchive's been upside down... apparently they intend to jack up the account's price and will finally provide a decent upload service that doesn't fall down as much as the actual one yet they will limit bandwith and have an upload meter installed. An interview with Hans-Peter Lindstrom by Moka and myself.

Chris: When did you become interested in dance music, were you more into the rock scene previously?

Hans-Peter: Yeah, I’m from the rock scene, and accidentally got into the electronic music scene when winning (hey!) a bedroomproducer-contest in norway in 1999 …

Chris: Did you release any tracks previously to your work as Slow Supreme?

Hans-Peter: Only as part of a 8-piece gospel-group singing the gospel according to elvis presley

Chris: How did you and Prins Thomas meet up?

Hans-Peter: We met in oslo in 2001. He was the best dj around. And I was curious …

Chris: Did you feel as though you were part of a new movement in 2005 with the advent of so much new Balearic and Cosmic influenced music? Do you see a certain amount of zeitgeist in what you are doing and what artists like Quiet Village Project are doing, for instance? Do you guys all have a secret headquarters somewhere? :)

Hans-Peter: Hehe, not as far as I know … I’ve been making music w/more than one chord-change since day one, since I need something more than just beats & a bassline … and I prefer to keep the tempo slow, because it gives me space to fit in more musical elements … heh.. the slower the better, although I realise now that it doesn’t make sense to make remixes in 100 bpm … haha.

Chris: What is the scene like in Europe at the moment, have you seen a big increase in fans of your style, or has the scene been growing for some time?

Hans-Peter: I get the feeling that the crowd everywhere is 95% ‘normal’ people who doesn’t know anything about cosmic or balearic. While the rest is nerds & dj’s. When I play slower tracks, or unaccessible’ stuff, people leave the dance floor. Most clubs in Europe are used to house and minimal, but I’ve been told that it’s now ‘allowed’ to promote a night with the dreaded ‘disco’-word … haha

Chris: Is it just me or does Norway seem like a seriously stylish country? Who is the person that did the amazing artwork on the Album and the Turkish Delight single, for instance?

Hans-Peter: haha, he’s from Finland. That’s where all the nice scandinavian design is from. Norway isn’t particulary stylish as far as I know …

Chris: I once read about a club in Oslo (at least I think it was in Oslo) that was actually a converted public toilet building in a park somewhere. Does it still exist? Is it rad?

Hans-Peter: Yeah, that’s true ! However, it’s closed now. It used to be good, I’ve been told, but there were a change in ownership at some point.

Chris: Is the collaboration with the release of the Lindstrom debut album on Smalltown Supersound a sign of things to come? Could we be seeing musicians from that stable collaborating with you in the future?

Hans-Peter: I don’t think so. I’ve realised that I’m a loner. I like to do everything myself.

Chris: How did you first come across Todd Terje?

Hans-Peter: At a student-dj-night around 2000. He was 18 maybe, and seriously into Salsoul & New-York-disco.

Chris: Is Hans-Peter or Prins Thomas still possession of The Idjuts disco balls?

Hans-Peter: Say what…?

Chris: Are you fans of the Compass Point era of Grace Jones, when she was recording all those strange cover versions, under the direction of Chris Blackwell, assisted by Sly and Robbie and Wally Badarou? (I only ask 'cos it's my favourite thing!)

Hans-Peter: I love the early 80’s Grace Jones productions. Sly, Robbie & Badarou defined her sound. Simple but effective. A huge inspiration.

Chris: Finally I have to tell you a story about my former co-worker Zweli. When he was still working with me he used to listen to your album on headphones, while he played this computer game where there's this bug that has to shoot all these crystal balls before they fall down a hole. The graphics are really trippy, so I really dug watching him play every now and then. While he was playing the one evening he started singing this song in Zulu. I couldn't hear the music, just the singing, so I turned around to watch the screen and the combination of the singing and the visuals was just incredible. I really think you guys should get together and do some sort of multimedia thing together! (if only I knew where to find him). You guys should probably come to play in South Africa sometime.

Hans-Peter: Hahaha. It’s a great story indeed !!!!! Yeah, sooner or later it would be great to come to africa !!

Moka: Psychedelic and metal guitarists seem to be a very important and subtle influence on your sound, I read on an interview on your label you were citing Malmsteen as a one of your music addictions at the time and even your mate, Prins Thomas, released an Ep tribute to Ash Ra Temple's guitarist, Manuel Goettsching, a few months ago. Would you mind sharing some of this guitar influences with us?

Hans-Peter: Hm … dunno what to say. All of the guitarists you mention are really good, and influences me in different ways. I like the sound of the guitar. It’s a very flexible instrument.

Moka: What's the composition process you follow? Is there a substantial difference between composing in collaboration with your mate or alone?

Hans-Peter: Thomas is working waaaay faster than I am. I used to finish a track or a remix in 1 week, but now I’m probably using 1 month. Reason is that I’m doing many different versions of the track, and then decide for which arrangement/structure is best for the song. When working with Thomas, we record loong jams and edit everything the next day.

Moka: What's been playing on your tour bus these months?

Hans-Peter: Which bus? Only flights in our world .. iPod-music … lots of good mixes.. recently, Tim Sweeneys beats in space mixes.

Moka: You edit, produce and even have your own label, what's your opinion on the music industry? and internet and peer2peer networks?

Hans-Peter: I believe blogging and P2P works fine when promoting a new release. It’s a very effective way to spread the music instantly. And I don’t think it hurt the sales, since I’m releasing mostly vinyl. Low quality mp3s cannot replace a physical vinyl-copy. More and more dj’s play cd’s, but I believe many still prefers vinyl…. And I don’t believe in fighting against new technology in general.

Moka: You've both did a lot of dj-ing on festivals on August and you had a great show on the Sonar Festival in Spain, can you tell us about these experiences? How's a Lindstrom and Prins Thomas gig?

Hans-Peter: I didn’t play at Sonar, but Thomas was there. Anyways, we’ve been travelling lots last year, and it’s a great way of meeting people, playing new productions to check if they sound alright, and eat good food from all over the world ! The only drawback with travelling is all the airports, transport, carrying, waiting, hotels etc etc … hm

Moka: The collaboration with Torgunn Flaten (on "run") and with Christabelle and the way vocals adjusted almost effortlessly into your music was well received and praised by fans and critics, does the future hold more vocal collaborations or vocal samples?

Hans-Peter: Yes, I’m working on some new tracks with both of them, and there might even be a taste of a christabelle-collaboration on 12” early 2007. She’s got a really great voice, and has this non-clubmusic-background which I think is an advantage sometimes.

Moka: What's your plans and projects for the next months?

Hans-Peter: Lots of studio-work, and some more travelling I guess. And maybe NYE in Tokyo with my girlfriend :o)

Being utterly stressed by exams and projects this last weeks I spent the past Saturday drinking myself off at a fancy 12 hour fest my grandfather threw to celebrate my grandmother's 70th birthday. At some point in this type of parties the band will eventually play a meaningful ballad selected by the couple and they'll get up and dance the piece while they get joined by other members of the concurrence. In the middle of my drowsiness I was left wondering the ballad I would choose in my own wedding. My mind kept thinking about "no surprises" by rh or "fade into you" by mazzy star but the lyrics ain't precisely in the light side of things- second thought I had was to instruct the band to play "heartbeats" by the knife in ballad style but I don't know how complicated or good this would sound so it depends on the band's talent.... then I thought, what the fuck, we'll dance tango! but I don't know how to tango and I'd have to learn, let alone the guests would probably think dancing tango would be a very pedantic gesture of mine so I guessed I'll have to wait for my counterpart to suggest something when the day comes and I'll worry about the light and the menu and seeing if I can get some popular artist in future decadence like beck or jamiroquai to play for an hour or two in exchange for food and some clothes.

(Yes, all this idiotic thoughts crossed my mind in brief 42 seconds when the first ballad was about to end. I didn't say anything to the people on my table because the weren't drunk enough and I'd seriously doubt they'd be interested in discussing the first song they'd like to play at their wedding.)

I'm really not much of a ballad listener, I mean I really enjoy many of them good old power ballads from the 80's although they make me think more of strip-joints than of people dancing, but I can't stand listening to that much cheese past the 10 minute mark. Sadly, for some of us, the assured celebrity of people like Kelly Clarkson and a group of female artists more focused on their vocal chords than rocking out might mean that we may soon see the emergence of the super-ballad once again. It will really only take one movie soundtrack or one career trajectory at the exact right moment to trigger it.

So I've been invaded with some sort of Middle Eastern bug... I just can't seem to get enough of those beautiful Turkish/Arabic/overall Middle-Easter tunes. It all began thanks to my dear friend Funda from the beautiful city of Ankara, Turkey... gee thanks Funda... now I can't stop listening to the CD you sent!

Well, now that Squashed has refused to provide me with the brand new musical obsession he promised me oh so long ago, I had to go along by my little self and find some new material to obsess over. Fortunately, that obsession didn't take long to impose itself on me, Funda introduced me to Emre Aracý and Rabih Abou-Khalil, I then found out I had some Mohammed Rafi stuff lying around in my computer! And while snooping around other blogs such as Undomondo I came across 2/5bz, a real treat *wink wink*.

I'm going to have to be brutally honest here... I know almost nothing about Emre Aracý, I tried to google him, but alas... all the sources I found were in Turkish....and I do not speak Turkish. All I know is that his music is right out amazing! He works the classical ottoman music very bravely, making it sound a tad erie in some points and in others a bit magical. While listening to is CD "Boðaz Ýçi Mehtaplarý" I sit back and imagine stories of dancing sultans, love scenes under olive trees and that famous Turkish sunset over the Maidens Tower in Istanbul. Once again, thank you Funda.

Ok, so next up is Rabih Abou-Khalil. This Libanese musician/composer takes an interesting approach on Libanese folk music, adding a jazzy twist to the concotion. Just listen!

Next, 2/5bz. These Turks put an edge on classic Turkish music and add a twist of electronic beats and bobs. I passed this song on to Funda, and she told me that they use parts of very famous classical Turkish songs, add some culture humor and mix it all up into one big song. I wish I could speak Turkish to fully get it...*sigh*.... (For better literature on these guys, visit Undomondo)

2/5bz - Karabesk

Last but certainly not least Mohammed Rafi. Rafi was probably one of the most famous playback singers in the Bollywood scene in the 70's. Rafi was a multifacetic artist, his songs ranged from religious to patriotic to just plain fun. This song is definetly on the fun side.

Debe ser la ominosidad de los tiempos que se vienen, pero de veras que qué ganas de fiesta nos dan por estas fechas. A los niños no les queda más remedio que fumarse un camello o atragantarse de diversas bebidas para soportar el placer. Al final solo quedan sonidos, vibraciones, recuerdos, quizá algun ligue y polvo, mucho polvo. El censo "clubber" no acaba de tener el encéfalo de un Hegel pero a la prensa les da por rebuznar tanto sobre el estigma de "lo psicotrópico" que ponen a los dancers a la altura intelectual de un Chomsky. Les confirmo que el cuenco de vitriolo no es un arma precisa. Palabra de una conciencia y venas limpias, a mí solo me gusta ver como parpadean las luces.

Moviendo el tema unos grados, el día de hoy les ofrezco unas joyas de retachas de cosmic y house minimalista (no me explico como este año me han salido tantas adicciones a los sintetizadores y a los bpm) que me han hecho las últimas noches insoportablemente deliciosas. Disfruten su fin de semana.

In the meanwhile, I leave you with 6 artists I found this week that balance their sound between indie, pop and electronic + a song from Charlotte Gainsbourg's new record that was written by french duo, Air and a Looper remix by Pulp that's a bit old (1999) but I feel it fits well within the context of the post (check out the shoegaze influence on the intro and the unmistakeable Pulp touch on the last minute of the song). Un playlist dedicado al piano. La mayoria de las canciones le coquetean al drone, al minimalismo, a la melancolia y al constante ulular.
La ejecucion de las piezas es lenta. Esto siempre me ha parecido favorable al escuchar piano, inclusive tengo la mania de bajarle el pitch en mi estereo a los discos de Janacek, Debussy y Satie de mi padre para que las canciones se escuchen aletargadas. La razon a esta mania es que en general yo soy de reacciones lentas y asi creo se puede exagerar y apreciar mejor el peso de las teclas, la respuesta de los pedales y como el sonido se desplaza dentro de la sala donde se encuentra ubicado el instrumento.

Flatline is a term I have become quite attached too these last days. I began to use this word for a specific playlist I created in my ipod, in this playlist one can find mellow music that borders on mellancollic but dosen't quite get there. I guess you have to listen to the songs to truly understand what I'm trying to explain here. But anyway, I've found myself listening incessantly to Calexico and Iron & Wine lately, I believe they're perfect 'flatline' material.

The notes, rythms and textures of these two bands blend perfectly with a with a silent retrospective mood. I personally like to enjoy these songs on my own, or quietly with a special someone. I actually think they can even fit into a 'farewell summer' playlist.

Either way, I hope you enjoy this mellow playlist as much as I do.

Las bocinas de mi computadora son muy pequeñas para despertar a los vecinos a esta hora con mi nostalgia por tiempos en los que nunca me toco vivir y de cualquier forma ya tengo reservada mi buena dosis de Merzbow, flying saucer attack y demas similes para cuando quiera cometer homicidio sonoro en venganza por aquellas tardes en las que he tenido que echarme la puta cancion esa del gorila-u-u-a y la discografia entera de David Bisbal y Chayanne en las clases de baile de sus hijas.

Aqui va la segunda parte con las canciones que no pude subir el sabado por falta de tiempo. Ok... so I actually really thought that this week would be hell, but it's actually starting off ACE!

We're running this big design project at school, we've got to design this "Interpretation Center" on an archeological site in a small town about an hour away from Guadalajara, so today, a couple of very good friends (one of them oh so very handsome I might add *giggle*) and I went to see this archeological site. To be honest, the place was FAR from mind-blowing, I was expecting a bit more, because they kept calling it "the most important archeological site on the western side of the of the country"... to be blunt, it was boring and hot as hell! I hate the sun! and the heat!
But anyway... fun part was that we got extremely lost, talked about junk food, music, movies, cartoons and bought some really good ice-cream.

So right now, I'm really in the mood for something fun and up-beat that goes with my bubbly good mood so a bit of synth/rock is the way to go at this precise moment in time. Let me share with you all my present love for life.

A true punk vet would be easily ashamed to look at the punk records in my collection, and would probably only grin with mild satisfaction when discovering "Raw Power" by The Stooges - I'd then hold the album religiously, and tell this is one of the few records I'd be willing to fuck to in its entirety, a 34 minute feast orchestrated by Piggy Pop and his Stooges truly at their rawest that practically guarantees a fantastic, night-long seeing to. Carefree, sexy and never taking itself too seriously is the key here, it says: I like to be the boss, but I am not afraid to let others drive my gorgeous, sleek machine at angst fuelled speeds. Punk fuck right = pure catharsis and that's exactly what effective cultural heritances are made of.

What's in this list:

- Is all saxophone solo in Rock 'n Roll bad? If not, prove it. (Actually this is a multi blog conversation. Here is one. Mainly discussing 80's rock and sax.)

- I like John Zorn's Naked city (1989). I've been wanting to post his songs for a while. One of my fav album, but very harsh and I can only listen to it end to end on special occassion. Below are softer and more melodious one. The loud one rips your ear in 15 seconds.

- My little own personal take why sax solo in rock doesn't sound satisfying: I want it sounds like a mean jazz solo (preferably Ornette Colemann humping John Coltrane), complete with extra long breathing and dynamic the goes off the chart. But that sort of thing is very hard to fit in regular rock song, since the sax will completely outshine everything else. Hence why it can only go with super loud ska and John Zorn. Okay maybe Morphine is an exception. ( Name other rock band with sax that sounds good at Morphine volume level/ovrall texture. Nada... They all sound like Kenny G. )

- Other fun song in the list: The Code International and Yoko Utsumi. Overall it's a change of pace from the usual downtempo, dark and mellow texture. I'll get back to usual MdM programming soon. :D once I am in that mood again.

Nik Cohn did eventually admit that he fabricated Tribal Rites of the New Saturday Night , his article for New York Magazine in 1975. The article went on to become the basis of the film Saturday Night Fever and in the process created the persisting perception that still rankles the true disco fans. Of course, he wasn't the first to ruin a musical movement by "reinterpreting" it for mass consumption, but it's still important to highlight the point, 'cos misconceptions linger. Walter Gibbons was probably the most respected DJ amongst DJ's in the seventies. He was famous for his flawless beat mixing of two copies of the same record, creating extended versions of tracks, live. Gibbons made history when he remixed Double Exposure's Ten Percent due to his radical approach. He was, according to Tom Moulton, the first person to extend the intro, so as to increase the impact of the vocals when they finally hit. He took remixing to a new level, where the experience of being on the dancefloor became the inspiration, as opposed to instant "radio-friendly" gratification. Walter did not believe in quickies, he extended tracks to lengths previously unheard of. These two mixes are amongst of his first, displaying just how much of a natural Walter was right from the beginning. The next track on the list was mixed by Shep Pettibone, a man that was too much for even Tom Moulton, who found Shep's style to be unmusical. These dudes were pioneers of a new way, which developed into the Garage sound of New York and the House sound of Chicago. Which influenced some cats in France, who ended up becoming world famous as Daft Punk. This version of One More Time is the eight minute, far superior, club mix (with obligatory extended intro) . When this track was released some of the dance music journalists didn't really get it. Perhaps they'll listen now. Last of all is the lesser known remix of Tina Moore's classic from '97. This track was huge on the UK speed "garridge" scene, but it's the faster Kelly G Bump N Go Mix that was more popular at the time. I was just thinking the other day that this version seems more "now". Ironically at the time it probably would have been old fashioned. So that:

Attack of the beards...

I've been hanging out in places on the net recently where the buzz is all about the Cosmic/ Balearic/ Beardo/ New Disco/ Edit revival. It's already been pointed out by at least one person that the 'scene' is pretty similar in nature to the electro revival that began back at the beginning of the noughties. That revival seemed to come to a crescendo last year with punk/disco going mainstream and LCD Soundsystem releasing what could probably be considered as Punk Funk's defining statement. The interesting thing is that Beardo (my favourite name for it so far) seems to have grown out of Punk Funk. There seemed to be a bit of a debate awhile ago about what would be the next big thing after Punk Funk. Some thought, and probably still think, that Noise will make a comeback. It definitely seemed as if the DFA people were totally behind that idea. From what I could gather Noise bands were invading Williamsburg in numbers. But then something strange began to happen. More and more people seemed to take to the notion that reviving smooth seventies rock and slow chilled out disco from the late seventies and early eighties seemed to be the way forward. And then, in the true spirit of zeitgeist, people started popping up everywhere. Like lost tribes the fans of the original Baia degli Angeli Sound (later to evolve into the Cosmic and Afro sounds), the people who had lived through the great Balearic era, and dudes out on the West Coast who had there own version of it all called Pacifica (I mean like, even Harvey lives there, y'know). So all these forces came together and realized that they hella complimented each other. It seems that we might be getting freal all over again.

The Sorcerer (his secret identity) is from Oakland and according to his myspace page he has some pretty eclectic influences. He seems to enjoy jamming with his friend Hatchback, who is actually from San Frandisco (sic) itself. He has pictures of really cools synths on his myspace page. I think he is implying that he owns those synths, and I'm trying not to be jealous. Together The Sorcerer and Hatchback did a song called White Soweto. It supposed to have been a "feel good" track about a white guy in Africa, I presume in Soweto, in the eighties. The Sorcerer notes on his webpage that the jam took an unexpected turn and ended up sounding like a soundtrack to an italian horror flick or "to what's really going down in the motherland". Well yeah, Soweto in the eighties certainly was pretty much like a horror film, just much scarier. The next track is called Pocket Check, which is also a jam with Hatchback. I like this one the most, it has Lindstrom-like qualities. Popsicle Orange rounds out the triple play. On the D J History forum Sorcerer did hint that he considered these to be possibly unpolished versions of his ultimate capabilities. I would like to encourage him in his endeavors.

Next up is some trippy Finnish classical music from Einojuhani Rautavaaru. He wrote Cantcus Articus for the degree ceremony for the University of Oulu. The recorded bird sounds come from birds in the Arctic. Rautavaaru is known for mixing up styles, using Romantic and Modern idioms like textures. This is the third and last part of Cantus Articus, and it's some pretty dramatic stuff.

Lastly we have a tune from Soweto. This group of guys were like a whirlwind back in the mid-nineties. They started a revolution called Kwaito. It was a revolution of being laidback. The title means something like "we are dancing to the music" (I just went and asked someone and they were unsure as to how it should be translated). The other thing that they keep shouting in the song is "Ubize moyeni" which means "we are shouting at the sky", and it's one of the few Zulu phrases that I actually know, which is pretty lame of me.

One month after his death, I'd like to give a well deserved tribute to the darkly handsome and charismatic early frontman of Pink Floyd. At the moment I thought it'd be better to remain silent and just light a pair of candles on top of my dusty bass amp while the other children farewelled barrett in their own uncertain ways. And so, I did.

Judging by some of the posts I read after Syd's death I realized sadly that half of the bloggers out there have hardly listened to any Pink Floyd's records, let alone the ones from the early Barrett years and that they were probably just seeking for some audience instead of posting out of love and respect for him. I, au contraire, have finished at last the tiny candle sanctuary in my room and I'm preparing a set of Syd's songs to play in front of it until high hours in the morning, hopefully I'll be joined by an idiot drug hive who calls himself Kurt in the electric guitar and a weird looking fellow who plays any kind of drums or percussions magnificently. If it rains, the night will be beautiful.

Even if you've never been interested in Pink Floyd at all, I strongly suggest you to listen to some of the renditions I'm offering you here, particulary "love song" by Livid and "golden hair" by Slowdive, the only two floyd covers I've heard that are so good that surpass the original ones. For your comfort, I'm dividing the covers in two parts, the first ones are Syd Barrett's compositions and the second ones come from the post Barret era.

Reveries for the lost echoes

Today I offer you a half ambient-vocal mix, I'm calling it "half" because it's not strictly ambient nor it has vocals all the way. It's more ambient in tone and feeling. The list was initially intended to be 8 tracks long but our upload service is giving us some trouble so I'm cutting it down to 6 pieces of earcandy.

Specially check out Daryl Hall's (ex-hall & "fucking" oates) "the farther away I am" from the album "sacred songs" which counted with the collaboration of the amazing Robert Fripp as a session guitarist making use of his then new "Frippertronics" (which mainly consisted of several loop tapes making harmonizing sounds while Fripp did his usual guitar magic overneath it to make it sound like there was a full orchestra in the studio) and John Martyn's "Small hours", a sultry 9 minute piece which has led several critics to describe Martyn as the "Father of Trip-Hop", approaching this song in its own terms will eventually reveal its secret.

Image: Moki, (pronounced mioke) a german artist with some very nice and varied artwork which at certain points reminds me of Gauckler's work although she mentions Hayao Miyazaki (princess mononoke, spirited away) as her main influence. Her site is quite difficult to navigate (don't you all hate flash sites?) but once you get to the illustrations is worth the search.

Speaking of which, one of my favorite illustrators, Maxi Luchini, has opened a new blog a month ago where he'll be constantly exposing some tidbits of his extensive and marvellous portofolio. Obligatory bookmark.

Although slightly abstract, this list should be emotive by design. The effect I am looking for is turning inside out, ripping apart everything that is comfortable.
